Understanding Your Dosha: A Beginner's Guide to Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
One of the most transformative aspects of Ayurveda is the concept of the doshas — three fundamental energies that govern everything from your digestion to your sleep patterns, emotional tendencies, and physical build.
What Are the Doshas?
The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They are derived from the five elements — earth, water, fire, air, and space — and each dosha represents a combination of two of these elements.
Vata — Air and Space
Vata governs movement, creativity, and communication. In balance, Vata types are energetic, adaptable, and enthusiastic. Out of balance, they may experience anxiety, irregular digestion, dry skin, poor sleep, and scattered thinking.
Physically, Vata types tend to be slender, with light frames and variable energy. They may feel cold easily and prefer warm, grounding foods and environments.
Pitta — Fire and Water
Pitta governs transformation, metabolism, and ambition. In balance, Pitta types are focused, intelligent, and driven. Out of balance, they may experience irritability, inflammation, acid reflux, skin sensitivity, and perfectionism.
Physically, Pitta types tend to be medium-built and muscular. They often feel warm, have strong digestion, and do well with cooling, moderate foods.
Kapha — Earth and Water
Kapha governs stability, strength, and nurturing. In balance, Kapha types are calm, caring, and grounded. Out of balance, they may experience heaviness, congestion, weight gain, low motivation, and attachment.
Physically, Kapha types tend to have larger frames, smooth skin, and enduring stamina. They thrive with movement, stimulation, and light, warming foods.
Your Prakriti vs Your Vikriti
Your Prakriti is your natural constitution — the balance of doshas you were born with. Your Vikriti is your current state. Ideally these are the same. But diet, stress, sleep, and lifestyle cause doshas to shift out of balance, and understanding this gap is how Ayurveda personalises your care.
A Note on Self-Assessment
While many online dosha quizzes exist, an accurate Ayurvedic assessment considers your pulse, digestive tendencies, emotional patterns, physical characteristics, and much more. A trained Ayurvedic practitioner can identify your Prakriti and Vikriti with significantly more accuracy.
Curious about your constitution? A Prakriti assessment is included in every first consultation.
